Mumtaz Mufti’s books are very famous among Urdu novels of Pakistan. He was born in the Punjab, Batala which is now part of India. Mumtaz was the son of Muhammad Hussain. Before beginning his career, he worked as a public servant during British control. He migrated to Pakistan in 1947 after the partition. He had his early schooling at Amartasar, Mianwali, and Multan. Mufti received his matriculation from DG Khan and his intermediate from Amritsar. He received his bachelor’s degree from Islamia College Lahore.

Mumtaz Mufti’s Life as a Writer

Mumtaz Mufti began writing Urdu short tales in 1947 while working as a schoolteacher. Other literary reviewers saw him as a nonconformist writer with liberal beliefs, influenced by the psychologist Freud, at the start of his creative career. Ashfaq Ahmed, a well-known writer in Pakistan, was one of his close friends. Mufti initially opposed British India’s 1947 partition plan, but later changed his mind to become a loyal Pakistani. Later in life, he would support Islam and its ideals. His conversion from liberalism to Sufism started because of Qudrat Ullah Shahab. Despite his changed opinions, he managed to maintain his distinct point of view. He wrote about issues that were conservative or sensitive. “Jhuki Jhuki Ankhain” was the title of his debut short story collection. Mumtaz Hussain came to recognize Mumtaz Mufti after writing this book.

His autobiographies, Ali Pur Ka Aeeli and Alakh Nagri, depict his two phases of life. Ali Pur Ka Aeeli is about a lover who questioned the cultural taboos of the moment. Alakh Nagri is about a disciple of Qudrat Ullah Shahab’s spirituality.
